Favor With God And Man

Scripture

Proverbs 3:3-4 “Let not mercy and truth forsake you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart, and so find favor and high esteem in the sight of God and man.”

Observation

In this passage, King Solomon, the wisest man that ever lived on earth, shares with us that the key to finding favor with God and man is found through a heart full of mercy and truth. As I meditate upon this truth, I am reminded how people loved to be around Jesus, even despite the truth of their sin and shame.  Jesus had favor with tax collectors, adulterers, drunkards, and even the righteous in their own sight because He embraced them in His unconditional love with mercy while at the same time never embracing their sin or condemning them in the truth of it.   Instead, in His loving-kindness Jesus drew people into repentance and in His mercy He delivered them from the power of darkness and conveyed them into His kingdom where we all find redemption through His blood and the forgiveness of sins.

Application

To become more like Jesus, we must have a heart full of mercy and forgiveness because that is the heart of the Lord. Psalm 86:5 says, “For You Lord, are good, and ready to forgive, and abundant in mercy to all those who call upon You.”  When we keep mercy close to our hearts and shed it upon others through love and forgiveness, we find mercy with God for ourselves along with favor and high esteem in the sight of God and man.  In addition to Proverbs 3:3-4 highlighted above, this is confirmed in the writing of James 2:13, “For judgement is without mercy to the one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs judgement.”

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for showing me mercy through Your unconditional love, forgiving me for all of my sin against You, and remembering my sin no more.  Help me to never forget Your loving-kindness and mercy towards me, despite the truth of my sin and shame, so that I may keep a humble heart full of Your love, mercy, and compassion towards others, despite the truth of their sin and shame as well. I love You Jesus! Amen!

Thomas Edison - Inventor of the Light Bulb

Quote: “The positive person understands that the journey of success is as enjoyable as the destination!” – John Maxwell

In our American society of fast food, cell phones, and instant-internet access, people have come to expect instant success in life.  Unfortunately, many people are disappointed by lack of success because of their instant gratification mindset and lack of commitment to put any effort into cultivating their opportunities.  A garden doesn’t grow unless someone takes the time to toil the land, plant the seeds, and water the plants.

Thomas Edison said, “There is more opportunity than there are people to see it.”  Why did this genius inventor make such an observation?  I think it is because people hold such short-term views of success that they become blind to the life-changing opportunities that require real work and long-term commitment.  I’m certain Mr. Edison took a lot of time, effort, and commitment to create the light bulb into a common everyday household good that we now take for granted and expect as an American right of life.  I believe the opportunity principle is the same for every opportunity in life – the bigger the opportunity, the deeper the commitment and the more work required to successfully cultivate it.

The opportunity to have great relationships with people involves time, effort, and long-term commitment.  It’s the same with the opportunity to maintain and live a healthy lifestyle or be a good steward of your financial resources.  Becoming an educated person doesn’t happen overnight; it’s a life-long developmental process for the growing individual.  And most importantly, the opportunity to possess a real relationship with God requires a hunger and a thirst to seek after Him and His Kingdom on a daily basis through time in prayer and the study of His Word.

Remember, the people at the top of the mountain didn’t just fall there; they had to climb to reach the summit.  John Maxwell states, “Successful people are those that just develop a habit of doing what unsuccessful people do not want to do.”  As a leader, cultivate your opportunities in life with a spirit of commitment and excellence to work that makes a difference and others are unwilling to do.  As you do, you can be encouraged by the wisdom stated in Proverbs that  “A person who excels in their work will stand before kings.”

Most High Trust

Scripture

Psalm 56:11 “In God I have put my trust; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?”

Observation

In this passage, David wages war against the fear of man by declaring his trust in God Most High. Even though the enemies of David who desired to take his life were many, David knew that his life was completely safe in the hands of Almighty God.  Whenever he became afraid, David would advance directly against his fear by crying out to the Lord and placing his trust in Him.  In the safest place of the Lord’s Most High Trust, David knew that God was for him; therefore, he need not be afraid of anyone who was against him.

Application

At times, when the fear of man unlawfully encroaches upon my life to rob, steal, and kill the destiny that God has planned for me, I will do as David and remember that the name of the Lord is a strong tower I can run to and be safe. With faith and humility, I will place my trust in God and not be afraid of man when doing what God has told me to do in Christ.  Even if others place their trust in chariots and in horses, as David wrote in Psalm 20:7, I will remember the name of the Lord our God.  For all my days, I will praise the Lord with humble courage for His abundant goodness, His saving grace, and His enduring mercy.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I praise You for You are Jehovah Nissi, the Lord our Banner! May Your Banner rule and reign over my life this day and all my days as I place my total trust in You. May Your favor surround me as with a shield as I take steps of faith to walk in the direction of Your good plan for my life. I love You Jesus! Amen!

Quote: “There is nothing as powerful as attitude.  Attitude creates your world and designs your destiny!” – Dr. Myles Munroe

If Dr. Munroe’s statement isn’t enough to spark a personal quest for a positive attitude, then let me add some more fuel to your attitude think tank.  Spell the word A-T-T-I-T-U-D-E on a sheet of paper and then record each letter’s numerical position within the 26 letter English alphabet underneath each letter.  For example, put 1 under the letter A because the letter A is the 1st position in the alphabet, put 20 under each letter T because the letter T is the 20th position in the alphabet, and so on.  When complete, add up all of the numbers and contemplate what the sum represents to you about attitude?

According to Dr. Munroe, “your attitude is the manifestation of who you think you are” and according to Webster’s dictionary the word “manifestation” is defined as “the act of revealing or the state of being revealed.”  If all of the letters of the word ATTITUDE add up to 100 [1+20+20+9+20+21+4+5] and your attitude is the manifestation of who you think you are, then it shouldn’t be difficult to believe that your attitude actually reveals 100 percent of the real you each moment of your life.  And the good news about this reality is that if you don’t like the life that your attitude is revealing every day, then all you have to do is choose a different attitude towards life.  It is in the power of this every day choice that determines the kind of life you live, the destiny you fulfill, and the legacy you leave.

In Deuteronomy 30:19, Moses proclaims the Word of the Lord to the people of Israel by declaring, “I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore, choose life, that both you and your descendants may live, that you may love the Lord your God, that you may obey His voice, and that you may cling to Him, for He is your life and the length of your days…”  Furthermore, the psalmist David wrote in Psalm 118:24, “this is the day the Lord has made, we will rejoice and be glad in it.”  From the Word of God, it is clear that we have the choice of a positive attitude towards life that produces the fruit of God’s generational blessings in our lives as well as a gladness of heart for living each moment of the day.

With a spirit of faith and commitment, choose life, by giving 100 percent of who you are to Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God, who gave 100 percent of Himself, so that you and I could have life and have it more abundantly.  In so doing, the spirit of leadership will be ignited in you with purpose, strength, and inspiration for creating your world and designing your destiny within God’s perfect will for your life!

Finding Life

Scripture

Matthew 10:39 “He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses His life for My sake will find it.”

Observation

In this passage, Jesus is teaching His disciples that the only way to find real life is to lose it for Him.  Fully knowing the persecutions that would come by following Him, Jesus encourages His disciples to pick up their cross and follow His example or they would not be worthy of real life found in Him.  According to Jesus, real life is only found through life completely surrendered to Him. He is the way, the truth, and the life in which no man can come to the Father except through Him.

Application

Jesus came to give us life and life more abundantly; however, this kind of life is only found through the Cross.  At the Cross, we lose our old life of sin and death and gain a new life of grace and mercy in Jesus Christ.  As we surrender our heart, mind, and will to the Lord on a daily basis and invite Him to walk and supp with us through His Holy Spirit, we can walk in the fullness of life that Jesus died to give us regardless of our circumstances.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the fullness of life that You died to give me. Help me to follow your example on a daily basis by dying to myself and living in You.  I love You Jesus! Amen!

Quote: “Living your best life now is living with enthusiasm and being excited about the life God has given you!” – Joel Osteen

Being excited about life…can that be a reality?  You might think to yourself, “Well, perhaps at home with family and friends, in my personal life, I can be excited about life, but certainly not in my work life.”  So let me ask you, why not in your work life?  Oh, I can hear the replies already.

“Work? Don’t you know work is a four letter word.”

“I mean work is work.  The less the work, the better the life.”

“Work is just a job so that I can really live life when I’m not at work.”

“Work is nothing but headaches, struggles, and conflicts that I can do without.”

“You want me to be enthusiastic about work…give me a break, then I’ll be enthusiastic.”

“Solve problems for people…yeah right, if you pay me more, then I’ll think about it.”

Although, I don’t know the statistics on how many people dislike their work, I do know instinctively that there are many people who work each day without knowing the true purpose of their work.  As a result, they can live 65 to 75 percent of their waking life unhappy, just getting by until the workday ends.  This is sad to me because I know it doesn’t have to be that way.  In fact, I believe that God created work for people to find passion and purpose in life.  Ephesians 4:12 states, “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”  Simply understood, the Lord created us to do His bidding in the earth.  Once you realize that God created you for good works to serve people and solve problems that make a difference in people’s lives, you unlock the door to passion, enthusiasm, and purpose in your work.

I learned from reading Joel Osteen’s book, Your Best Life Now, that the word “enthusiasm” is a derivative of two Greek words: en theos – which means “inspired by God”.  By adding the word service to enthusiasm, we get “service enthusiasm which then means “service inspired by God.”  When you are a service enthusiast, you find joy and satisfaction in your work because you are serving others by the inspiration of doing God’s will in whatever work He has called you to do.  In Colossians 3:23, the Apostle Paul writes, “Whatever you do, do it heartily [with passion], as to the Lord and not to men.”  With a spirit of commitment and excellence, serve others with enthusiasm, and you will discover joy and satisfaction in your work as a real gift from God!

Multiplied Seed

Scripture

2 Corinthians 9:10 “Now may He who supplies seed to the sower, and bread for food, supply and multiply the seed you have sown and increase the fruits of your righteousness, while you are enriched in everything for all liberality, which causes thanksgiving through us to God.”

Observation

In this passage, the Apostle Paul is writing to the Corinthian church about their giving.  In doing so, he eloquently communicates how the hand of God is involved in giving through the farming language of sowing and reaping.  Those who sow sparingly will reap sparingly and those who sow bountifully will reap bountifully. This is the way God has chosen to be glorified in our giving.  Without sowing, there is no reaping. Without God, there is no seed to sow nor any multiplied seed that is sown.  This process is simply designed by God; He provides the seed and He multiplies the seed that is sown in faith.

Application

In God’s economy, 1 + 1 = 100. To the natural mind this equation doesn’t make any sense; however, when we sow a kernel of corn in faith, God can multiply it and provide a 100 fold increase of seed kernels.  We do our possible part and then He does His impossible part which brings the impossible increase [1+1=100].  On the other hand, 0 + 0 = 0 in God’s economy because without faith we cannot please God and without Him, we can do nothing.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of faith and the provision of seed to bountifully sow in faith.  By Your grace, may You bountifully multiply the seed that I have sown in faith.  As Your Word declares, with men this is impossible, but with You all things are possible.  Help me Lord to always give in faith as a cheerful bountiful giver like You and have faith in You to multiply the seed that I have sown. I love You Jesus! Amen!

Quote: “Few people attain great lives, in large part because it is just so easy to settle for a good life!” – Jim Collins

So when is good, good enough for you, your team, and your circle of influence?  You might think to yourself, “I’m a good person, I have a good team, and I work for a good company.  I live in a good neighborhood, I have good friends, and I make a good living.  Things are as good as they’ll be and that’s fine with me.”  Sadly, we all too often settle for the mediocrity of a “good life” when there is so much more we can live for.  In John 10:10, the Lord tells us that, “the thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy.  I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.”  The only life that will ever really be good enough in this world is the abundant life found in the Lord.  He is Jehovah Rohi, the Lord our Shepherd, whom guides us into a life of excellence and abundance that far surpasses any “good life” we can attain on our own.

In his book, Good to Great, Jim Collins further elaborates that one of the requirements to turn something good into something great is to “confront the brutal facts, yet never lose faith.”  To me confronting the brutal facts means discovering and facing the honest conditions of your life – all aspects – and then doing something about it through a spirit of faith in the One who makes all things new.  This process requires a safe environment that offers people an opportunity to be open, transparent, and vulnerable to judge themselves.  The Apostle Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 11:31, that “if we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged”; however, truly judging ourselves requires the ultimate safe environment of eternal Grace, Mercy, and Truth that accepts us just as we are, releasing our past, and creating our future.  Facing the facts in the presence of redeeming Grace is the first step to experiencing real change that produces greatness found in God.

Concluding, I have an important question to ask.  Are you living up to your fullest potential and fulfilling the destiny God has planned for you?  It’s not just a good question, it’s a great question that you must ask and honestly answer to become all that God intends for you to be.   With a spirit of faith, don’t ever settle for the “good life” when the Lord is “able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think” in Him!

All Came To Pass

Scripture

Joshua 21:45 “Not a word failed of any good thing which the Lord had spoken to the house of Israel. All came to pass.”

Observation

In this passage is the fulfillment of God’s promise to the children of Israel regarding the Promised Land that He said He would give to them. God promised Israel the land of the Jordan for their possession and they took possession of it and dwelt in it.  God promised them rest all around and they rested in every direction. And God promised that no man would be able to stand against them and He delivered them from all of their enemies. Not a single Word from God’s promise to Israel failed to come to pass.

Application

What God says He will do, I can trust that He will do because God is not a man that He should lie.  Furthermore, the Word of God says that all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.  Therefore, as a child of the Most High Living God, I can take great comfort in all of His promises to me because the Lord is faithful and He will fulfill His Word in my life just as He fulfilled His Word in the lives of the children of Israel.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Word that is a light unto my path and a lamp unto my feet and Your faithfulness that reaches to the heavens. I praise You as Jevohah Nissi, the Lord my Banner, and invite Your Banner to rule and reign over my life, my home, my family, and my community. May all of Your promises be completely fulfilled in my life as I trust You and serve You all the days of my life. I love you Jesus! Amen!

Who Am I

Image via Wikipedia

In 1 Chronicles 17:16, King David, contemplating the greatness of God, declares “Who am I, O Lord God? And what is my house that You have brought me this far?”  At one time, King David was only a little shepherd boy tending sheep in the mountains, and if not for the greatness and faithfulness of God, he would have never become the king of Israel. Only God could take a small unknown shepherd boy and make him king.  In fact, in verse 20 of the same chapter in 1 Chronicles 17, King David says, “O Lord, there is none like You, nor is there any God besides You.” In this place of humble spirit and personal reflection, David declares how BIG God is, how little he is, and how GOOD God is to make a little man into a big man in Him.

Leadership Principle #1: If We Don’t Spend Time with God, We Can Forget Who We Really Are In Him

How unfortunate it is that each of us can so easily forget who we really are in Christ as we go through life on a daily basis. Personally, I think it is because we all have 4 different areas of life identity that we are constantly faced with each day.  These four life identities are best represented by the Johari Window model which defines the 4 identities as follows: the ARENA identity, the FACADE identity, the BLIND identity, and the UNKNOWN identity.

  •  The ARENA identity is that part of our life identity that is KNOWN TO OTHERS and is also KNOWN TO OURSELVES. It represents the definitions of our life where we work, play, and live life openly and publicly at home, work, and the community and everyone knows about that part of our life. For instance, most people who know me, also know that I am a husband, father, pastor, business leader, speaker, and writer – such life identities for me represent my ARENA identity.
  • The BLIND identity is that part of our life identity that is KNOWN TO OTHERS, but is NOT KNOWN TO OURSELVES. It represents the definitions of our life that are very clear and seen by others; however, this part of our life will go undetected to us until something or someone exposes these blind spots to us. For instance, TV shows like Candid Camera, Undercover Boss, and even American Idol are all great examples of people having their potential blind spots in life – which everyone else can plainly see – finally exposed to them on a personally uncensored basis.
  •  The FAÇADE identity is that part of our life identity that is NOT KNOWN TO OTHERS, but is KNOWN TO OURSELVES. It represents the definitions of our life that we mask in front of others because we don’t want anyone to know about that secret part of our life.  For instance, if someone were to take a look at our check book, credit card transactions, and internet history, they would potentially discover some things about our FACADE life identity that very few people, if any at all, would know about, especially if we live life without any accountability partners who sincerely care about us.
  • And lastly, the UNKNOWN identity is that part of our life identity that is NOT KNOWN TO OTHERS and is NOT KNOWN TO OURSELVES. It represents the definitions of our life identity which have not yet been discovered or defined because they reside in the deepest part of our life identity that only God knows about and can reveal.  This is the place of life identity represented in Jeremiah 1:5 which states, “Before I [God] formed you in the womb I knew you” and Jeremiah 29:11 which states, “For I [God] know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.” The only way we will ever be able to discover this part of our life identity is if we submit ourselves before God, like King David, reflecting on how great God is and asking Him the humble personal reflective question found in Psalms 144:3 “Lord, what is man [who am I], that You take knowledge of him [me]? Or the son of man, that You are mindful of him [me]?”

Leadership Principle #2: If We Forget Who We Are In Christ, We Also Forget Christ

In his book titled, Soulprint, I like what Mark Batterson has to say about discovering our UNKNOWN identity quoted as follows: “Until you see yourself through the All-Seeing Eyes of God, you will never get a vision of who you can become.” In reading this, I am also reminded of the scene in The Lion King where Simba has been running from his life and Raifiki brings him to a water pool where Simba sees his father in his reflection upon the water. In a moment of Simba’s despair, Raifiki encourages him to look deeper.  In going deeper into the place of his unknown identity, Simba finds his father, Mufasa, who says:

“Simba, you have forgotten me.  You have forgotten who you are and so you have forgotten me. You are more than what you have become. You must take your place in the circle of life. Remember who you are!” Click here to watch this scene.

So then let me ask this question. Have we become like Simba, forgetting who we are in the Lord and so forgetting our heavenly Father?  As believers in Christ, you and I are children of the King of kings and Lord of lords, joint heirs with Christ in the kingdom of God. We are royalty!  May we never forget who we are and whose we are because it matters in the kingdom of God and it matters to the world around us. Not sure…then just take a look at the recent Royal Wedding and contemplate the significance of our Royal Wedding with Christ.  If it matters for the son of Prince Charles, it most certainly matters for the sons and daughters of the Most High King!

Leadership Principle #3:  No Matter What, We Can Always Remember Who We Are In Christ

Therefore, let me emphatically remind you from the Word of God of who we are in Christ as taken from the chapter headings in Neal T. Anderson’s book titled, Who I Am In Christ.  Unfortunately, I did not know the author of this material when I shared this leadership message in our staff Chapel service earlier this week; however, my wife has just pointed out to me that the little reference card that I’ve been keeping in my Bible for so many years was in fact given to me by her and taken from Neale Anderson’s book. I am happy to share it with you knowing that freely I have received this little reminder card of Who I Am In Christ and freely do I share it with you to help you remember who you are in Christ as well.
