Finish Line

Finish Line

Quote: “Great joy comes with finishing the race God has called you to run!” – Joyce Meyer

Several years ago when my friend Scot and I began to seriously stretch our physical fitness levels, we decided to support the American Diabetes Association by participating for the first time in their annual double century ride in Mississippi – a 100 mile bike ride on Saturday, an overnight stay, and a 100 mile bike ride back on Sunday.  So we started out Saturday morning on our hybrid mountain road bikes and completed the 100 mile journey after 8 hours of steady pedaling on the first day. After dinner, we turned in early for a good night sleep and rest for our aching bodies. Sooner than I would have liked, the morning alarm awoke us so that we could get ready for the long 100 “country” mile ride back.

Well after 75 miles of pedaling on day two with a grueling gulf coast headwind blowing against us much of the time, we stopped at an ADA water station where I informed Scot that I was done. He said, “What do you mean? We’re not finished.” I said, “I know we’re not finished, but I’m done. The headwind is too strong, my butt has a rash, and I’ve decided to put my bike in that sag wagon and go back with it.” Then Scot challenged me. “No you’re not, you little ninny! We’re gonna finish this thing!” Then the nice lady at the water station says, “Yeah baby, you only have 25 more miles to go and we’ve got some Boudreaux’s Butt Paste.” And I was thinking, “Right, easy for you to say. You haven’t been pedaling a bike for two days and 175 miles…”  So I responded, “No, I really think I’m done.” Then Scot, speaking to my inner spirit firmly said, “I know you. You’re not a quitter and we’re going to finish what we started!”  So with his belief in me as a close friend, I put on the butt paste, got back on my bike, and am now glad I finished the race.

Do you know that when we are down and struggling in life, Proverbs 18:24 says that “we have a friend that sticks closer than a brother”?  His name is Jesus and He believes in each of us to be overcomers in our faith even more than the way that my close friend Scot believed in me on that day when I was having difficulty believing in myself and struggling to finish the ADA race.  The Lord tells us in His Word that we’re not quitters and firmly encourages us in Romans 8:37 by stating, “Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him [Jesus] who loved us.”  Therefore, we can conquer any situation in life because the Lord loves us, believes in us, and will strengthen us whenever we need as we place our total trust in Him and depend upon His supernatural strength.

Furthermore, 1 John 4:4 states, “You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” This means that regardless of the adversities we face in life, spiritually or naturally, we should never forget that God’s greater power is at work in us to overcome any challenge or situation we face.  With the Holy Spirit living in us as believers in Jesus, we can be assured that His supernatural strength and wisdom is always available to help us complete the race that He has called us to run with Him. With a spirit of faith and commitment, receive the Lord’s encouragement to never give up in life because when we place our trust in the Lord, the best will surely come!

An Occasion For Testimony

Scripture

Luke 21:13 “But it will turn out for you as an occasion for testimony.”

Observation

In this verse, the Lord is sharing with his disciples that there will be a time of persecution when people that follow Him will be brought before kings and rulers for His name’s sake.  When that happens, the Lord says that it will turn out as an occasion for testimony.

Application

From this passage, I can be assured that if I am following the Lord Jesus Christ, I can expect to be persecuted for His name’s sake.  In fact, the Lord even says in John 15:20 that “’A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you.”  Therefore, whenever I am mistreated, misunderstood, taken for granted, spoken about in contempt because I follow the Lord, I should not be surprised.  Instead, I should simply approach the situation as He did – receive it as an occasion for testimony.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I praise You for You are Jehovah Jireh, the Lord Who Sees and Who Provides!  Thank You for seeing all things concerning me including those things that have opportunity to hurt me because I follow You.   Give me strength and wisdom Lord to respond to all such occasions as an opportunity to be more like You! I love You Jesus! Amen!

Grarncarz w Rabce / Potter in Rabka

The Potter's Wheel

Quote: “God and the world are waiting for your life to be unleashed!” – Christine Caine

Over the summer, I spent a day with my wife and two oldest children shopping on one of the most extraordinary merchant streets in America – Magazine Street in Uptown New Orleans.  As we set out to explore the exquisite wares of the Funky Monkey, Buffalo Exchange, Sucre’ –  to name a few of the many unique shops on the historic street – I shared with my family that I wanted to find and buy something special that day, but didn’t know exactly what.  So as we made our way through each different section of shops – cafés, clothing, antiques, jewelry, and art – we came to the last shop of the day, the Potsalot Pottery shop, where I knew in my spirit I would find what I was searching for.  After we browsed all the beautiful handmade earthenware, my family left the shop and I became disappointed not to find that special piece.  Then, as I stayed behind unwilling to give up my search, I discovered the owner of the shop working at his pottery wheel on a wet supple piece of clay and was powerfully reminded of the Scripture in Isaiah 64:8, “But now, O Lord, You are our Father; We are the clay, and You our potter; And all we are the work of Your hand.” Intently watching the potter and pondering this verse in my heart, the potter looked up at me, perhaps thinking I was a bit strange, and asked if he could help me.

I explained to him that I was looking for a special piece of pottery and asked him if he knew the Scripture verse in the Bible about people being the clay and the Lord being the potter.  To my surprise, he knew the verse well, took me over to a water vase on the top shelf in the corner of the shop, and told me that it was his best pottery piece to represent the Isaiah verse.  With the earthen colored vase in his hands, he pointed out the markings down the side of it and said they represented the trials and tests we go through in life. He then pointed to the base of the vase which had several indentures on it and stated that they represented our imperfections and mistakes in life. And lastly he pointed to the lip of the vase which he made with his thumb and said it represented how our lives are intended to be poured out for others.  Stunned by his allegory, he didn’t have to tell me anymore, I had no doubt that I had found the special item that the Lord had put on my heart to search for all that day.

As I reflect further on how our lives have been created by God to be poured out like the water vase created by potter, Alex Williams, I also contemplate the tragedy of a life represented by a vase containing water that is never poured out for anyone.  Instead of being useful and continually replenished with life-giving water, such an idle vase would be nothing more than a clay pot with stagnated water unfit for drinking.  As human beings wonderfully and beautifully created by God, if we do not use the extraordinary gifts and talents that He put inside of us to bring Him glory and serve others, then we too can be earthen vessels wasting the God-given potential inside of us.  Such is no one’s purpose intended by God because Ephesians 2:10 states, “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” Therefore, with a spirit of generosity and humility, embrace the power of the Holy Spirit to unleash your extraordinary gifts and talents through good works that serve others, glorify the Lord, and fulfill the Lord’s perfect intended purpose for your life!

According To The Time Of Life

Scripture

Genesis 18:14 “Is anything too hard for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.”

Observation

In this verse, the Lord visited Abraham and declared that his wife Sarah would have a son according to the time of life appointed by the Lord for them.  However, because Abraham and Sarah were both advanced in age and Sarah was past the age of child-bearing, Sarah laughed within herself, considering such a plan to be too unlikely for them. In His reproof, the Lord reminds Abraham and Sarah that there is nothing too hard for Him.  In fact, according to the time of life that the Lord had planned for Sarah, He visited Sarah as promised and she bore a son as He had spoken.  As a result, Abraham named his son Isaac, meaning laughter.

Application

From this passage, I can be assured that God has a good plan for my life and at the appointed time He will make it happen because there is nothing too difficult for Him.  Even if His plan for my life doesn’t make sense in the natural and seems too laughable to consider, I must trust that He is faithful.  In fact, in Jeremiah 29:11 the Lord says, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.” A future and a hope in this economy?  Yes.  A future and a hope in this relational situation? Yes.  A future and a hope in this set of circumstances? Yes.  Regardless of the laughable odds perceived in the natural, in faith, the answer is simply yes because the Lord is faithful, He has a good plan for me, and at the appointed time He will fulfill His Word in my life.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I praise You for You are El Shaddai, the All-Powerful and All-Sufficient Lord of my life!  Thank You for the future and the hope that You have planned for me.  At Your appointed times in my life, I trust that You are faithful to complete the good work that You have begun in me because You are the faithful Author and Finisher of my faith! I love You Jesus! Amen!

Boundary

Boundary Marker

Quote: “To get from where you are to where you are going, you have to be willing to be in between!” – Jentezen Franklin

As I ponder the in between places of my life journey, I wonder just how many people actually try to follow a map of their life journey without ever personally knowing the Creator of their life and the Author of their journey.  To me, it would be kind of like trying to read without actually knowing how to read.  For illustration, try to read the following paragraph.

Ehva uyo reev dinpxreece ibneg ni wneebt wto edfifntr cpaesl no uyro uynrejo fo flie?  Nunrotfnuelyt, hte ni wneebt cpaesl fo flie nca eb yvre nucrfotmbaoel; wovhre, hwti God Almighty, hte One owh onskw revey irha no uyro adhe, uyo nca ahcre uyro nlafi sdtenitaoni, on trretma ohw nucrfotmbaoel hte uynrejo gihmt eb.

Try as you may, but because the letters in each word are totally scrambled, the paragraph is virtually impossible to read and comprehend, unless you have some way of understanding the author’s intent and creative design of the paragraph.  Similarly, I believe the map of each person’s spiritual life journey is pretty much the same way – impossible to read and comprehend – unless someone personally knows the One who created them with specific purpose and intent.  However, let’s see what happens when some boundaries are added to the paragraph above by ensuring that the first and last letters of each word are in fact correct.  As such, please read the new paragraph rewritten below with a correct letter boundary at the beginning and end of each word known and applied.

Hvae you eevr exiprenecd bineg in bweetn two defifnrt plcaes on yuor junreoy of lfie?  Ufnrotnuelty, the in bweetn plcaes of lfie can be vrey ucnofmortbale; hweover, wtih God Almighty, the One who kowns ervey hiar on yuor haed, you can raceh yuor fianl dtsenitaoin, no mettar how ucnofmortbale the junreoy mgiht be.

Surprisingly, the paragraph can be read and comprehended when the scrambled letters of each word are placed in between the boundaries of the correct first and last letters of each word.  And guess what!  This is also true for the map of our spiritual life journey when we surrender our lives to the Lord Jesus Christ, the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last perfect boundary marker of our life.  With the Lord as the Author and Finisher of our faith, we can trust His Word stated in Romans 8:28, “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”   This is really good news because regardless of how scrambled the in between places of our life journey may seem to be, as we follow Jehovah Roi – the Lord our Shepherd – we can be confident that He will direct our steps and make our paths straight toward the fulfillment of our destiny in Him.  Therefore, with a spirit of faith and humility, abundantly celebrate each in between step that takes you from where you are and closer to where you are going on your spiritual life journey with God!

Discovering Treasures of Darkness

Ruby Falls, inside Lookout Mountain, in Chatta...

Ruby Falls

In Isaiah 45:3 the Lord says, “I will give you the treasures of darkness And hidden riches of secret places, That you may know that I, the Lord, Who call you by your name, Am the God of Israel.” I’m not sure about you, but I have never really been one to think about darkness as a place to find treasure.  In fact, what happens when we find ourselves in a serious storm at night and all the power goes out?

It’s A Dark Place When The Lights Go Out

For me, it is at first a little alarming when the lights go out because I don’t normally expect for the power to suddenly turn off.  Secondly, it is a little fearful in the house because everyone is instantly in total darkness and it is difficult to find our way around. Then, it becomes an immediate search for light – a flashlight, a lighter, matches, a candle – anything that will give some light in the midst of the surrounding darkness.  If you are prepared for such a situation and know where you can find some light, it makes things a whole lot better a whole lot quicker.  Otherwise, you can do nothing except wait in the darkness until the power is restored or morning comes.  Either way, any waiting in darkness is never fun.

It’s An Even Darker Place When The Lights Go Out Spiritually

So that’s an experience in physical darkness, but what about finding yourself in the midst of a spiritual darkness? It could be a spiritual darkness that comes upon you by no fault of your own such as finding out that your child has a life threatening cancer like my parents discovered in my sister when she was 16 years old.  The uncertainty and fear of the unknown can create some dark spiritual places.  Or, what about the long journey home as a real prodigal son or daughter in the house of God?  This would be someone like me who was a legitimate blood bought son in the house of God, called by God’s name, living in the Father’s house, and then leaving one day with the Father’s inheritance and blowing it through prodigal living and personal failure away from the Father’s house. The journey home can have some dark spiritual places for a legitimate son or daughter of God turning back to the Father’s house.

For anyone who has never found themselves in such a dark place as a prodigal child of God, they might think, “How can that be? Doesn’t God have forgiveness? You must not understand the fullness of God’s grace and His mercy.”  To such a response, I would say, yes, God does have grace and mercy, but I also know that God has truth too and we must all face the brutal truth in our lives.  For instance, a real prodigal son or daughter of God must face the brutal truth found in Luke 9:62 stating, “But Jesus said to him, “No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God” and John 14:21 stating “He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me [Jesus].” Plus, the devil knows the truth of God’s Word pretty well also and will try to use parts of it in a way to heap condemnation upon us if we don’t know the whole truth of God’s Word and allow His whole truth to search us and know us as we face the brutal truth in our lives, while never losing hope.

We Must Face The Brutal Truth Of  Life Even When It’s Dark

In Jim Collins’ book, Good to Great, his research found that “good” companies become “great” companies, when they are able to face the brutal facts of their situation, yet never lose hope. I have learned and continue to learn that genuine people of faith are able to do the same thing – face the brutal facts of their life, yet never lose hope because their hope is in Christ and the totality of His Word.  1 Corinthians 9:10 states “that he who plows should plow in hope, and he who threshes in hope should be partaker of his hope” and Colossians 1:27 states, “To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.”  Therefore, when the devil tell tells me that I’m not fit for the kingdom because I put my hand to the plow and once turned back, I respond to him in the spirit of truth by telling him that I am plowing and threshing in hope – Christ in me, the hope of glory – and the whole truth says that I have every right to be a partaker of this hope.

When I read and study the Word of God, I am so thankful that God recorded the truth about the lives of the heroes of faith in the Bible as I find comfort in such truth when I have to face the brutal truth in my own life.  In fact, when Peter denied the Lord three times on the night of the Lord’s trial, I’m certain when the rooster crowed and the brutal truth confronted Peter, he found himself in a dark spiritual place.  Luke 22:56-62 records the truth:

“And a certain servant girl, seeing him as he sat by the fire, looked intently at him and said, ‘This man was also with Him.’ But he denied Him, saying, ‘Woman, I do not know Him.’  And after a little while another saw him and said, ‘You also are of them.’ But Peter said, ‘’Man, I am not!’ Then after about an hour had passed, another confidently affirmed, saying, ‘Surely this fellow also was with Him, for he is a Galilean.’  But Peter said, ‘Man, I do not know what you are saying.’  Immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, ‘Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.’  So Peter went out and wept bitterly.”

Afterwards, as Peter faced the brutal truth of his failure, I believe the devil could have very well been heaping loads of condemnation upon Peter by telling him, “If you loved Jesus, you would have been there for Him.  If you loved Jesus, you wouldn’t have denied Him three times. If you really loved Jesus, you would have kept His commands.”  However, isn’t it interesting that when Jesus meets Peter after His resurrection, He calls Peter, Simon – son of Jonah – and asks him three times:  “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me? Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me? Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me?”

So let me ask you this question: In the biblical story of Jonah, where did Jonah find himself?  It was in the belly of a whale which most definitely had to be a dark spiritual place.  Therefore, by Jesus calling Peter, Simon – son of Jonah, He was in essence saying: “Peter, son of God in a dark spiritual place, do you love me? Peter, son of God in a dark spiritual place, do you love me? Peter, son of God in a dark spiritual place, do you love me?”  And each time, Peter said, “Yes, Lord, I love You” including the third time when Peter says, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.”  With Peter’s third response, I believe he was quite possibly intimating, “Lord, You know all things. Your truth has painfully searched me and you know me – the good, the bad, and the ugly truth about me.  Yes, Lord, I love You because You first loved me to the point of giving Your life for me even though I don’t deserve it.”  In that place of painful truth, the Lord called Peter out of spiritual darkness and into his spiritual destiny where Peter also found the treasures of the Lord’s faithfulness that reaches to the clouds, His mercy that endures forever, and His grace that is sufficient.

God And His Treasures Can Be Found In The Dark Places Of Life

When we allow the truth of God’s Living Word to fully search us, know us, and do a work in us, no matter how painful the truth of our lives may be, we truly can find treasures of darkness that can be found no other way in our relationship with the Lord.  In fact, I like to relate such personal spiritual discovery to the personal discovery of Ruby Falls by Mr. Leo Lambert on December 30, 1928.  Following his discovery of the falls nestled deep into the Lookout Mountain Caves in Chattanooga, Tennessee, he shared the following sentiment as written on a plaque hanging on a wall at the Ruby Falls tour site:

“Discovering Ruby Falls was like discovering God. At first, it is very dark, scary, and uncertain.  You don’t know what lies ahead. You bump into things you didn’t even realize were there and you suffer injuries, bumps, and bruises. You fall down in sticky mud and mire and feel like you cannot go on.  But you get up with a feeling that somewhere ahead lies something more wonderful than you can ever imagine.  As you add light to what you discovered, you find that the things that caused you suffering and injury were wonderful God made things put there for you to witness and give you joy.  It is all more than you ever imagined you could witness. It is God, and Ruby Falls and the Lookout Mountain Cave are God’s creations, made for man to enjoy. I am just a little proud that He used me [to discover it].”

Sometimes on our journey of life, we can find ourselves like Mr. Lambert, crawling through some tight dark places where we may suffer some bumps, bruises, and pain; however, if we keep on going with the light of God’s Word to light our path in those dark places of life (Psalm 119:105), we can rest assured that the Lord will lead us to His treasures of darkness that we could not find any other way than to go through the darkness with Him. Just like Mr. Lambert’s surprising discovery of the magnificently beautiful Ruby Falls in the deep dark caves of Lookout Mountain, we too will find unimaginable treasures of spiritual growth and maturity as we trust the Lord to faithfully lead and guide us through the darkest places of our lives.

In fact, no matter how dark the situation may be in our own lives, we can find great encouragement from David who was no stranger to finding the Lord’s treasures of darkness in his own life.  There is no better example of this than Psalms 23:4 where David states, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.” Furthermore, in Psalm 139:7-12, David writes, “Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there. If I take the wings of the morning, And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, Even there Your hand shall lead me, And Your right hand shall hold me.  If I say, ‘Surely the darkness shall fall on me,’ Even the night shall be light about me; Indeed, the darkness shall not hide from You, But the night shines as the day; The darkness and the light are both alike to You.”  I take great comfort knowing that God is always with us (Matthew 28:20), even in the dark places of life, and He promises that He will never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). May all glory, blessing, and honor be to the Lord for He is good, He is faithful, and His Word is true!

Reap In Joy

Scripture

Psalm 126:5-6 “Those who sow in tears shall reap in joy.  He who continually goes forth weeping, bearing seed for sowing, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.”

Observation

In these passages, the Word of God promises that those who sow in tears shall reap in joy.  And not only shall they reap in joy, they shall reap in joy, abundantly, bringing their sheaves (bountiful harvest) with them. Because the Lord is our Great Comforter who cares for us so much that He puts every one of our tears into His bottle (Psalms 56:8), He alone can turn our tears into multiplied rejoicing.  In fact, Jesus can sympathize with our weakness because He also knows what it is like to weep as a person.  When his friend Lazarus died, Jesus wept; however, His weeping was turned into multiplied rejoicing when He also raised him from the dead.

Application

During times of difficult life circumstances, I sow in tears before my Lord and Savior, knowing fully that He hears my cry and will answer me according to His faithfulness.  I take great comfort in the promise of God that my weeping may endure for the night, but joy does come in the morning (Psalms 30:5). Furthermore, Romans 8:28 states, “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” I know that the Lord doesn’t waste anything in my life including my tears because He has promised and He is faithful (Hebrews 10:23).

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I praise You for You are the Great Comforter of my soul! Thank You Lord for comforting me when life circumstances cause me to weep before You in the humbleness of prayer.  May all the tears I have sown through the night seasons of my life reap multiplied rejoicing through the complete fulfillment of Your Word in me!  I love You Jesus! Amen!

The San Francisco 49ers' Super Bowl XXIX troph...

49ers' Super Bowl Trophy

Quote: “It is not enough to have a dream. You must also have a dream team!” – John Maxwell

Recently I had the privilege of hearing the great NFL Quarterback Hall of Famer, Joe Montana, speak at an international health and fitness conference in San Francisco.  He said that many people think there is no “I” in team – which is true; however, he also emphasized that many people fail to see that there is also a “me” component in team.  He then further explained that a team wins championships when each team member fulfills their personal responsibility to become the best that he or she can be for the team – fully developing their individual strengths and talents – just like Jerry Rice did from the first moment he joined the San Francisco 49er team.  For example, whenever Jerry Rice would catch a pass in practice, he would turn and immediately run for the end zone, no matter what, as if he was playing in the Super Bowl.  After doing this every time, Joe Montana asked him one day why he was always running for the end zone and making practice longer than it needed to be.  Jerry Rice simply commented, “Aren’t we practicing to make touchdowns?”

After that, not only did Jerry Rice continue practicing every day to make touchdowns, but all of the other wide receivers began to do the same thing.  As a result, on game day when one of the receivers would catch the ball, it was their disciplined habit to run for the end zone along with their team mates running down the field.  Often one of them would be in position to make a touchdown-scoring block for the receiver with the ball. Such personal commitment from each team member to practice with excellence each and every day was one of the primary reasons that the San Francisco 49ers scored so many touchdowns and won five Super Bowl Championships as an unprecedented professional NFL dream team.

Did you know that a dream, just like a team, has no “I” in it either, especially when it is a God dream?  However, all God dreams most definitely have a “me” component as they are not designed to be accomplished without Him.  John 15:5 states “I [Jesus] am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.”  Because God must personally prepare and qualify each of us individually for the dream He has put on our heart to accomplish with Him, we must daily submit ourselves to His practice field of character development necessary for becoming all that He created us to be.  Plus, no God dream can be accomplished alone, so we must carefully discern the divine relationships established by the Lord for His kingdom dream teams.

The Lord Himself modeled this when He developed His own God-appointed dream team as stated in Mark 6:7, “And He [Jesus] called the twelve to Himself, and began to send them out two by two, and gave them power over unclean spirits.”  It is clear from the team model established by the Lord that a God dream cannot be accomplished without Him nor can it be accomplished without others.  Therefore, with a spirit of wisdom and excellence, trust the Lord to prepare you individually to accomplish the God dream He has put on your heart and fully equip you as a God-appointed member of a mighty kingdom dream team!

Say The Word

Scripture

Luke 7:6-7 “Then Jesus went with them. And when He was already not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to Him, saying to Him, “Lord, do not trouble Yourself, for I am not worthy that You should enter under my roof. Therefore I did not even think myself worthy to come to You. But say the word, and my servant will be healed.”

Observation

In these passages, Luke records Jesus’ encounter with the astonishing faith of a Roman centurion. The centurion had a servant who was sick and about to die so he sent elders of the Jews to ask Jesus to come and heal his servant.  However, before Jesus could even get to the centurion’s house, the centurion sent friends to Jesus saying that the Lord did not need to visit his house, but only say the word and his servant would be healed.  Because the centurion understood authority, he also understood the power of a word spoken with authority and therefore had great faith in the power of the Lord’s spoken word to heal his servant.  As a result, Jesus marveled at the centurion’s great faith and the servant was healed.

Application

The same is true today for me as it was true for the Roman centurion – there is power and authority in the spoken word of God.  In John 6:63, Jesus says “The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life” and John 1:14 says that “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” Because of the Word of God, I know that Jesus is the same today, yesterday, and forever Heb 13:8).  And furthermore, I know that the Lord is no respecter of persons (Acts 10:34 KJV) and He is a respecter of faith (Heb 11:6).  Therefore, as I demonstrate my faith in God and speak His Word over my life, I will see the power of His Word fulfilled in my life just like the centurion did more than 2,000 years ago.

Quote: “God’s vision – His big idea – is Heaven coming to Earth!” – Myles Munroe

Sitting in an executive meeting with our CEO one afternoon, he shared a delightful aspect of his vision for the kind of culture he desired for our leadership team to create in our healthcare organization. “We need to create the kind of company that says ‘hi’ to one another,” he emphasized.  “If we can’t do the simple things really well, like warmly greeting each other, then how can we expect to do the really big things well, like saving people’s lives?”  As I left that meeting, I knew that our CEO was right.  We needed to begin engaging our culture in a way that would infect it with such common courtesy and kindness towards others that our organization would be irresistibly different.  So I went back to my own leadership team to enlist their support for such straightforward culture changing action.

In my management meeting, I declared, “Our CEO says that we need to create a company that says ‘hi’ to one another. I agree with him.”  A leader sitting across the table from me responded, “Hum, you tell 50 percent of the people ‘hi’ in this building and they won’t tell you ‘hi’ back!”  Astonished, I questioned him, “You mean to tell me that you can tell 50 percent of the people ‘hi’ in this building and they won’t tell you ‘hi’ back?”  And the young lady sitting next to me says, “Yeah, and one of them is you…”  Totally surprised, I responded, “Me??”  With everyone laughing at this point, she says, “Yeah, I’m in the elevator with you all the time and you hardly even know I’m there.”  Laughing with the others, I genuinely plea to her, “Well, I don’t want to be like that, so please don’t let me do that again.” And so it was through that honest feedback that I began to sincerely change, becoming respectfully conscious of others, and warmly greeting them with a simple, courteous,  kind – “Hi, good morning, good afternoon” – greeting.

Do you know that God has the same kind of delightful vision for His kingdom…on earth?  He desires for His people to do the simple things of the kingdom really well and by doing so, infect the popular culture on earth with the irresistible culture of His kingdom as it is in heaven.  Matthew 25:37-40 states, “Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You?  Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’  And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’”  So then, I believe the Lord has the same kind of question of His people on earth as my CEO had of our leadership team.  How can we do the big things of the kingdom really well, like winning souls, if we don’t spend the time to do the little things really well, like feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, visiting the prisoners, giving drink to the thirsty, providing shelter for the homeless, and even saying “hi” to one another?  With a spirit of commitment and generosity, let us diligently seek to change the earth and its cultures by doing the simple things of the kingdom really well – simply loving others as ourselves!
